Final Expansion of Housing Court Statewide Hailed as Victory
On July 17, 2017, Governor Baker signed into law a provision in this year’s FY18 budget which included the legislation for the final expansion of the housing court statewide. When the Governor signed housing court into law, he reduced the $1 million proposed to start the expansion to $750,000. In September, 2017, both the House and the Senate, restored the start-up funding for FY18 back up to $1 million.
This is a significant victory for many in this state who fought for the housing court to become statewide. Two million people in 84 cities and towns in Barnstable, Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Dukes, and Nantucket counties will now have access to a housing court.
