Housing Court Is Expanding
On July 17, 2017, Governor Baker signed into law statewide Housing Court.
This was a major victory for the 84 communities that did not have access to Housing Court.
In 2018, the focus turned to implementation and full funding for the Housing Court and the Tenancy Preservation Program.
On July 26, 2018, the FY19 budget was passed an included full funding for the Tenancy Preservation Program ($1.3 million) and for Housing Court Expansion ($2.6 million). The budget also included increased funding for rental assistance programs that prevent evictions and work hand in hand as a critical resource to strengthen Housing Court.
Communities continue to focus on implementation, expanding the Tenancy Preservation Program, creating new Lawyer for the Day Programs, and working with Housing Court staff to set in motion new sittings.
